Well, I met my first bookobsessor yesterday. We drove up to Te Anau - halfway up I realized I'd forgotten to find out where teachie's accommodation was so we'd have to go to the information centre to find out. Walked into the info centre and there they were! That was convenient. :giggle:
They even had presents - we swapped books (my one for teachie's three - good deal, I thought!) and they'd got me a boomerang in Oz. Lovely handpainted one.
We sat by the lake and had lunch together, watched a 20 min documentary in the information centre (it was getting cold and wet) and then went for a walk along the lakeside to a wildlife centre (the weather pulled through in the end). New Zealand being what it is, the wildlife consisted of birds, birds and some more birds. Kea, kaka, kakariki, pukeko, a takahe (I've never seen one before, they're so rare - this one was an old girl, 20 years old).
They were heading off on a boat across the lake to a glow worm cave that evening and today they're off on a Milford Sound cruise so I hope they're enjoying themselves.
So when are the rest of you coming to visit?

Great to hear you met up with teachie on her world trip. Do all birds in NZ have a k in their name?

I'd love to visit NZ one day. Been to Oz but that was 20 years ago!

It was great to meet up with you veganmedusa, thanks for the email. I have read the book and will no doubt leave it in Fiji to continue its travels. We have had a great time on the South island, even though it has been very wet, I think we took the rain around with us.We did manage to get a great pic of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman in the reflective Lake Matheson. Today we are off to the North island and hopefully some better weather.

Re. the bird names - pretty much. Maori only has 10 consonant sounds (including wh & ng) so the same ones crop up a lot. So you get kea, kaka, takahe, weka, pukeko, kereru, etc. Oh, tui - no k in that!

And I still haven't been to Oz so you're one up on me! You know how you often ignore the places close to you because you can visit them anytime, but you never get around to it?

Teachie, so did you decide when/if you're going to be in the San Francisco area? If so, I'd love to meet up with you too if we can find a time that works for us both.

I'm actually in the Silicon Valley but San Francisco is only about 40 minutes away right up the peninsula so I'd need a day or two leeway to make sure I can clear my schedule. Also, Mike lives SFO as well so if I can drag him along too (since you'll have hubby in tow anyway), then I will.

So lemme know if you're gonna be in Frisco at all and when...

ETA - looking at the map on your blog http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog/jo ... /tpod.html it looks like maybe you're planning to be in San Francisco on the 5th of February.

Sorry not to answer sooner, John gets on doing his blog and I don't get a look in on here! We are off to San Fransisco tomorrow Fri 5th and we leave Monday morning. It would be great to meet up if you can fit us into your schedule. I will be on again later and in the morning to see if you can make it.
