I'll be spending a month in England. I leave Dallas on Saturday, 25 May and return on Monday, 24 June. I'll be working Monday thru Friday in Hursley -- a small village just outside of Winchester. I'd love to arrange a meeting (or two) with you folks in the UK.

Also, since I've spent a lot of time in and around Winchester, I don't have any big sight-seeing goals for that area, but I'm open to suggestions for things to do or see on weekends. I'll have a car and can drive anywhere within reason -- or we can take the train somewhere. Hubby will be accompanying me and he's disabled, so we wouldn't lean toward anything that has a large amount of walking involved.

Hi elsi, it would be good to meet up with you if possible. I live some way from Winchester, between London & Cambridge, not far from a town called Braintree in Essex. If you are likely to head north of London in your travels then it would be good if we could meet somewhere.

Cambridge is a lovely town to visit with its old colleges, as is Oxford which is easier to get to from Winchester. I tend to walk about these places but I would think both have bus tours if that is easier for your husband.

I think heading up toward Cambridge would be fun. We visited there in 1990. Sang a concert in King's College Chapel. Magnificent acoustics! We took a walking tour of the University and enjoyed it very much. (That was before hubby's stroke.) Heck, I've never seen Braintree and it's probably lovely.

In most of my trips to England, I've mostly spent my time in Hampshire. One year I took my mother with me and we spent a week toddling around the Cotswolds, staying in various farmhouse bed and breakfasts.

Hubby and I like "off the beaten path" kinds of places -- fewer crowds and usually more interesting than the well-known tourist sites. We're open for lots of suggestions.

I remember a long time back when I visited, I went to Stratford-upon-Avon and totally love it. So beautiful. There was lots of tourist though it wasn't touristy... not sure about now.

Stratford Upon Avon is indeed beautiful (and not far from me). The town is quite compact so there's not a great deal of walking, or there's an open top bus tour which includes various Shakespeare related sites:

The town is popular with tourists but as Auki said it does not feel touristy, perhaps because it's equally popular with locals too.

Oh! I'm going to England & Scotland in August and will visit Stratford on Avon.

I'll post more towards that time - it would be so fun to meet some UK folks!
