I just got my first ever trick-or-treaters! I've always lived in apartments before, and even though I bought candy just in case, no one ever came to my door. When I was living in Colorado the apartment managers even gave us signs to put out if we had candy, but we got a horrible snow storm and the kids stayed indoors.

So far I've had a ninja turtle, a pumpkin, and a cat. The turtle and the pumpkin are my neighbors.

Anyway, I have to run away to watch for more kidlets! Huzzah!

I'm super excited about getting trick or treaters tonight too!!! We've always lived in apartments or student housing, so this is the first year we're actually getting batches of kids! I love it!

And I also think its hilarious all the parents who are bringing out little 2-year-olds who can't even TALK! They barely know what's going on and the parents are as excited as I am....*sigh* so silly!

Is it better to give the kids a few pieces of candy, or let them pick their own? I can't figure it out. I have a nice mix of candy, and I don't want to give them something they don't like, but some of them look really confused if I offer them the basket.

I think it's okay to let them pick as long as they know they can't take too much.

In my hometown, it appears that no one goes door to door anymore. There's a main strip with stores that runs through town and the street was packed with kids and parents trick or treating at the stores. I knew I wasn't going to be home today so I put out a little halloween bucket with pixie sticks. :)

Thanks! They all seem to take just one piece, very carefully. So cute!

I miss have trick or treaters. My brother and I used to totally decorate our homes, when we were living at home with are parents and after we moved. Most of the kids just took a handfull as we always said they could (we bought tons and tons of candy)

I hand it out....kids want lots but I think most are too polite to help themselves to more than one. I usually give 2 or 3 little packs to each kid.

I had my first trick or treaters also. They started coming at six and I turned my light off at 7:30 (I had six pieces of candy left and also hadn't had three seconds to eat dinner!) I was glad I got a warning ahead of time that the area our new home is in has been known to be prime territory! I started off letting them choose a couple pieces, but then when I saw the volume of kids I decided to just dump stuff in their bag. My strategy was this; if a kid came to the door alone, I let him pick what he wanted, but if kids came in a group, I figure they'll just trade around later anyway!

My favorite: There was one little girl who can't have been much more than two, and she came trooping right up to the door, so I scooched down low and she said trick or treat so I put a candy in her bag, and she looked in my bowl and said "what happened to all your candy?" I said "there were so many people!!" and she looked awed, then turned and walked away. her mom says to her "say thankyou" so she turns and walks all the way back up the steps, stands right in front of me and smiles and says "thank you" and turns and walks away again. precious!

My second favorite: there was a troop of obnoxious teenagers hauling their younger siblings around; the older kids didn't have bags or anything, just got in line to get some candy. I heard them coming. The first kid in line was probably fifteen, and he was wearing a rather tight costume. Before I opened my door (but could see through the window of course), he came up the stairs...ahem...adjusting himself pretty heartily. I opened the door and he looked up and I said "That's some way to introduce yourself." He opened his mouth to say something and nothing came out--the look on his face said it all. I handed him a piece of candy and he hung his head in shame and walked away. It was awesome.

I like reading you gals' stories. It's nice to see it from the POV of someone who's not used to having trick or treaters. (I grew up with it and still live in a family neighborhood now so it's nothing new to me. )
