Each exchange group has 12 members and each member is assigned one month of the year. Exchange groups run for one year, but not necessarily coinciding with the calendar year. During each member's assigned month, each of the other 11 members will send a book to the member whose month it is. For example, in February, the member who is assigned February will receive a book from each other member of their exchange group. At the end of each year, the groups decide if they want to continue another year and if so, if there are any members who wish to drop out - so there are often opportunities to get into the groups at that time.
