I'd like to see a section left open to the public. I was thinking maybe the Book Talk section. I'd have to look, but I don't think people post personal stuff there -- and since we're all about books, it would give a bit of an introduction to us. We could add a topic with information on swaps and VBBs and pin it to the top.

I also like this suggestion.VeganMedusa wrote:I'm also good with a whole lockdown. Would there be an explanation of what all goes on here visible? Like maybe the basic rules to swaps, VBBs, relays, and exchanges, so that people can see what it's all about?
It was my post that kicked things off, so I thought I should chime in here. I used to live in a big city, but now I've moved country and live in a village. So I feel like anyone who's ever heard of me would recognise me from my BC profile. Also, my work has changed and I now have a more public role. All that makes me more inhibited about what I post in discussions here.
I was really pleased that others then suggested protecting a lot of our posts behind a password. I take the point that new members would be more attracted if there were some representative discussions viewable without a password... Is it worth approaching some of the newer members to ask what convinced them to join?
Thanks for taking this seriously, and thanks for the discussion!

Here's our current intro text at the top of the forum for guests and non-logged in members:
I also think it'd be a good idea to let potential members know what it's about here if we're going to lock all of the forums down so rewording that introduction concisely but informatively could be a good goal to strive for.
We can change this text to include whatever we want to say.wrote:Welcome to BookObsessed. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Sounds like a good idea. I like else's idea of leaving the book talk section open as well.

I'm cool with the lock down proposal including giving guests a topic or two to view
I'm still thinking that I'd like the entire site locked down with a concise explanation in the area in Cherie's post.CheriePie wrote:Here's our current intro text at the top of the forum for guests and non-logged in members:

I think we get pretty personal in all the sections and don't really see the payoff of having any sections wide open.

For me the issue with locking down only some areas is that I'd have to remember where I am, so if a conversation spontaneously happens, I'm not likely to think "Okay, I'm in a public thread so I'll watch what I say." I'm more likely to blab out whatever and regret it later.
But other people might have more brain cells than me to cope with this.
