I'm going to New York City for two weeks at the end of February. Are there any obsessorites here who are from the Big Apple? I can't remember anyone, but figured I'd ask. I probably won't stay the weekend, but I should be free after work and am staying relatively close to Time Square. B)

If no locals, any suggestions on places to eat, things to see (and open after working hours) etc are welcome. I haven't been to NYC in maybe 10 years??

MsJo used to live in NYC before she moved to Missouri. She'd probably be able to suggest cool places to visit.

Tell me more about what kind of stuff you want to see or what kind of stuff you want to eat and I can probably make some recommendations.

Great! I know I won't be able to see any historical sites, but anything quintessential New York? I've been to Rockerfeller plaza before. Anything else that's a must see that would be open at night time?

As for food, I'll probably hit Chinatown at some point, any good dim sum or chinese places that are more on the up and up? Probably want to have some good Italian as well, especially since the Italian food in the DC area is so bad. I'm on a vegetarian kick at the moment. The steak houses my co-workers frequent didn't work for me on my last trip, I ended up dining solo most nights. I'm not into suit and tie places, but definitely want to avoid chain restaurants. I like family owned places with good service and nice people, especially if I can linger for a while. :hotdrink:

I also like to mosy around areas and just people watch. Are places generally safe to walk around at night? Like maybe more populated hipper areas? I know from DC there's a right side and a wrong side of the tracks, etc, so any guidance you can give is helpful! :D

If you like Rockerfeller then you really need to go Top of The Rock! I liked it more than the Empire State Building for so many reasons!

Pier 17 was a favourite place of mine. There were some great places to eat and people watch. Also, if they are running this time of year...A night sailing trip! There is a schooner boat with bar tat goes out to Liberty Island and back. Went both times I was in NYC! They leave from the pier.

The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is a wonderful stop in Chinatown. They have the regular flavors like red bean and green tea as well as the exotic flavors like vanilla and chocolate. Also, have you ever had soup dumplings? I kind of adore soup dumplings, which are basically just what it sounds like--a dumpling filled with soupy goodness than you eat over a spoon and try not to spill on your shirt. But they're delicious. My top choice is probably Shanghai Asian Manor, 21 Mott Street, but there's another place on Mott St. that's also good, that also has Shanghai in the name, but I can't remember the exact name--Shanghai cafe maybe?

Hmmm...my favorite place is probably Il Buco, down at 47 Bond Street. But the place is tiny, so can be hard to get a seat. If you're by yourself, eating at the bar can be nice. Entrees probably $20+, so I don't know if that's out of the price range you're looking for. I never found it out of line for what you get or for NYC, but it's on the pricier side of semi-casual places.

I think most of Manhattan is pretty safe as are the decent neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. I probably wouldn't venture north of about 105th St. on the east side or 115th on the west side of Manhattan without knowing where I was going. I wouldn't be randomly out in Crown Heights or even the edges of Prospect Heights in Brooklyn, but you'd be fine in Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg, Park Slope, or the parts of Fort Greene that are near the subway. I'm less familiar with the neighborhoods in Queens, so can't speak to those.

But you'll probably end up staying mostly in Manhattan anyway.
