I have no idea what I posted (also can't find it now..)  I'm an equal opportunity pet slave and animal lover.  Right now my paws are kitties, but I'd get a dog if I had enough space and could be here (normally when there isn't a pandemic) to properly see them cared for.  Usually when working i"m gone too many hours (thank you traffic congestion!) for it to be good for a dog (what with the letting out and walking).  I grew up with dogs, horses, fish, bunnies, cats, birds..  I'm missing a few species..  but you get the idea.    Left to my own devices, and if I had a ranch or farm, I'd have probably started rescuing professionally by now - including horses.

I wanted to be a vet when I was a kid, but as I grew up I (this is not an excuse, it was just reality as I saw it at the time) encountered several male teachers who did not believe that girls (women) should be in math or science (oh hai chemistry*!), and it seriously hindered my progress in those areas.

*I had a chemistry teacher my junior year who literally announced the first day of class "Boys start with an A, girls start with an F, women do not belong in the sciences and if you have a problem or questions don't come to me."   Which meant (as I'd changed high schools mid-year, I was already struggling with figuring out where /what we were doing and how this text worked.

Thus with all that, in the end, I didn't pursue the vet career.  Came to learn while getting my BA's that I'm actually really good at math and science, but you need teachers who are compatible in the type of math teaching.  (Mind you I've worked in Finance for decades..)    Shame, I'd have been darn good doing something in those areas.. too old now.

Well this has been Kiri confesses to some of her not so bright childhood experiences .. next time  *lol*
Ah, you are a kindred spirit - I too wanted to be a vet but I really wasn't sure if I could take all the blood or euthanize any animals.  I was good at science but math was another story.  I was sick in 6th grade and missed the entire section on fractions and since it was never explained to me, I did not recover well.  I was always in the advanced classes but with math I got thrown into the remedial group which pretty much destroyed my confidence in my ability to do math until my second time in college as an adult!  This all definitely influenced my career path/choices, so I know what you mean.

Hi DD you are really chatty!
Yes I only got 3 response to my mini challenge. :( I guess the challenge involves to much hard thinking for in the middle of the night...
Ha - I am either saying nothing and lurking or I get like this!

I think it's hard to come up with a challenge in Dewey's.  I always feel guilty doing the challenges and taking time away from the reading!

I don't work in Hospice but work as a patient advocate in a hospital. So if there is a death or imminent death, if there is a code in the ER or anywhere in the hospital, I'm the person who gathers the family and acts as a go between with the medical folks who and the family. Some days are harder than others. I'm there for the very worst day of the family's life and I often think that I'm the face of death for those families. It gets pretty heavy. I recently dealt with the death of a child of a friend. the baby was brought in by EMS and we were unable to save her. The mother arrived with police and as she was walking up to ER entrance saw me and from my face knew the horror of what was coming, she started screaming my name and NO NO NO and fell into my arms.  I was with her when she saw her baby and held her until her husband could get there. It is the hardest thing, and I feel guilty for feeling sorry for myself, because what I experienced is not near what she did. I know that everytime she sees me, that's what goes through her mind. We have talked and she has expressed how thankful she is that I was there for her and that her friends were there  with her sweet baby girl.  I'm sorry that I've laid this here on you all. Work family has been great and we've comforted each other. Ellie loved shoes and there will be an event in November called Shoes for Ellie. We will be collecting shoes for foster children in her honor.  Thanks for reading and letting me get my feelings out.
Oh M, that is so difficult!    I almost think that hospice would be easier since people are expecting the death.  Thank you for being so strong for the families.  Please feel free also to vent to me any time in messenger if you'd like.  Also please let us know if there is a way we can donate for Shoes for Ellie.

Catching up on the posts and have some questions/comments for you all ....

Kathy - Bravo on losing 35 pounds!  I find it difficult to lose weight.  Any secrets to your success?

Answer if you like ....  don't mind me - just curious and feeling chatty - inquiring minds - well, you know.

I did a really big push to lose weight and start exercising after I retired and so I went on Weight Watchers. I did really well for a while and lost 30 lbs. Then vacations started and holidays and my husband retired and I tried to not go overboard, but you know how that goes. I gained back around 5 lbs. and quit losing altogether. Then my husband's doctor told him he had to lose weight and so he and I both went on Weight Watchers. I have quickly lost the 5 I'd gained back along with 5 more and we are still working on it. Of course my husband has lost like 25 in the same time it took me to lose 10.  Not fair, but typical.
I did WW a long, long time ago (sometime before Sarah Ferguson endorsed it to give you some idea) and had some good results.  My hubby also did it and lost twice as much as me in half the time also.  I think it's a well-balanced plan although it is probably somewhat different today.  I should really look into it .....  I get some (probably not enough) exercise and that helps considerably but I could definitely stand to lose some.
I started WW right after the birth of my last child (who is now in his 30's, lol). I did the nursing mothers program and the weight fell off me. I was having to sit around at 10:00 at night and finish eating everything they told me I should eat to be healthy. I kept the weight off for years and then when I went to work full time, it started creeping up and up and up. The program is hugely different now and I didn't like it at first. It is a point based system, but I found I can take any recipe I have and find out how many points it is and decide if it is worth it or not. There is a long list of things that are zero points, mostly veggies and fruit, but also things like eggs, chicken and turkey (depending on how they are cooked of course). For now, it is working pretty well for us.

Finished Nightmares! The Sleepwalker Tonic.   Fun middle-school age read with just the right amount of creepy and cool.

Started a classic British mystery, which I hope to finish in time:

Wow it's the 28th already!     Bit o' housekeeping..

The :stars: winners :yahoo: from the last three prize days need to go pick their prizes (cause they haven't yet)
Prize #8 (23 Oct) -  Azuki
Prize #9 (25 Oct) -  Meshe
Prize #10 (27 Oct) - Dancing-Dog

This RAT Ends in a few days (the 31st)  we can extend it if y'all want.  If you want to extend, give me an idea how long.  =)

I was also thinking a post-Thanksgiving (the US Holiday) RAT might be fun.  Opinions?

now for my reading/listening schedule
I'm still working on the Ewan McGregor/Charley Boorman audios.. which are really good so far.  I'm giving the actual reading (except the three books by the bed) a rest for a week or two.  In new things,  I tried listening to LeVar Burton via his podcast.  A+!  I understand why everyone loves his stuff now.  Having been too old for Reading Rainbow I never heard him read until now, just appreciated his acting.    I also found two new podcasts which I'm enjoying perhaps a bit too much.  :giggle:    One has a new cocktail with mini-review at the end (gotta love a good cocktail!)

Returned to add the titles and links..
Legends From The Pacific — legendsfromthepacific.com
   Criminalia — https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-cri ... -69919318/
FYI - the second one leads to heart podcast.. I dont use them, you can find it on several podcast apps.

I'm preparing to move about the litterboxes and kitty furniture... which will go over like a lead brick with the furry ones.  But once done I can decorate for Thanksgiving and decide where the tree will be for Dec.  I'm also going to do the carpet before the rains come.. so yeah any pleas from my paws shold be ignored..

I also finally made pumpkin pie late last night.  The paws got plain pumpkin with their breakfasts to stave off baked goods theft.  Its a thing here.. trust me you haven't lived until you discover your pets making off with your latest efforts and trying to eat them before you take it away from them...  I lost most of a muffin bake that way with my last crew. *sigh*

What are you guys up to?  Ready for Halloween?  With the different things going on, have you done anything?  I'm going to make up a handful of treat bags cause I have little neighbors who might want to distance trick or treat.   Other than that I don't expect anyone here..

A Thanksgiving RAT will be nice. I can offer a couple of prizes for it. I like the chatter that goes on here. I get tired of Facebook and this is a nice change.

Kitties will not be happy with you moving around their stuff, lol. How many kitties do you have? When we moved into this house, it had a big box built into a corner of the laundry room. The house used to be an electric and gas (now it is all electric), and the gas water heater used to rest on the big box. My husband cut the top off and made it hinged. He cut a cat door in the front and put trim around it. That's where we put the liter box, so Pretty has her own little restroom. I bought a little cat mat to go in front of the door that catches most of the litter on her paws.

Our neighborhood has gone all out for Halloween. My husband and I drove around the other night to look at all the decorations and lights. As for treats, I like eating Happy Meals. The hamburger is small, I get a nice handful of fries and some apple slices. Then I take the toy and put it away for Halloween. So I always give the kids a toy and some candy. Since I'm not sure we will have many trick or treaters this year, I bought packages of fruit snacks instead of candy to hand out. What we don't give away, I can give to my grandchildren for their school lunches.

I have "benches*" that I place their self-cleaning litterboxes in.  *I'm putting the second one together this weekend, after I line it to make the wood safe from accidents.    I"ll attach pics below.   True they won't like it, but since they are getting two new kitty furniture items, I'm thinking they will be ok with it.. afterwards.  Nope ... no spoiled paws over here..      Pretty's box is a great idea.  I've adapted under sink areas in the past usually hanging a nice curtain for their privacy.

Halloween/neighborhood - wow sounds great.  Did you take pictures?    I used to take my dog for a happy meal (being celiac I can't have it), he was unsure the first time, even growled when they reached out for the money.  However, once he was given treats (at both windows, then a hamburger and some fries) he thought this was DARN GREAT and would jump in my lap to wag his tail and greet the workers after that.  Trying to drive with a wiggling excited canine hoping to score more treats is.. not easy.

Like you I get tired of FB.  Its nice to have this space and relax.

Cat Bench 1.jpg (18.35KiB)
^--- This has nice features but is a bit too small to hold the automatic box.   (length without removing the inset (internal) panel.)
Also, it's too short heightwise for the boys to use without crouching.   so I'll be altering it to raise the height now that I found dowels.

Cat Bench 2.jpg (64.66KiB)

This one shold be ok heightwise, it is going under a window in the livingroom.   The automatic boxes do so well they are simple to clean, and constantly sifting the litter (v. quiet operation).   They love those litter boxes..   pic below.

I have a pic of them in the new(ish) perch (aka cat tree) but it's not on the computer.. I'll find it and post that later.. in the meantime...

Aveni and the new litterbox.jpg (748.64KiB)
This is Aveni checking out his new litterbox (when he was the only paw here)  He's rather sciencey and wants to know how EVERYTHING works..

This is his first Winter Holiday photo (I used it on our card)
