You had a couple others on your list I've read and enjoyed very much, but Candace Millard spoke at a luncheon for LiteracyKC, and then also hosted the Johnson County Library's Stay Home and Read a Book Ball earlier this year, so I have picked her book for you! I'm interested to know what you think, I want to read her also!
I really enjoyed her River of Doubt and I expect I will like this too. It is just one that keeps getting pushed back. Thanks for putting it on the top of my TBR.
Finished! Very good. Thanks pushing it to the top of my TBR
Millard has real gift for writing history--she tells the story. She is never dry or long winded.

Very cute! Not the greatest story ever but good to read on a summer afternoon sitting in the shade, enjoying a relaxing afternoon. I found some truly funny paragraphs that had me smiling for a while.

Loved it!! Although I need a bit of refresher of what Chocolat was about, and I keep imagining Johnny Depp - the younger Depp, not this crazy pirate wife-beating man - playing the role.

Because I remember wanting to read it a few years back, when I read about its reviews as it came out. Let me know how you like it!
I finally finished reading this book just this month. It took me forever because I could only listen to it when I was sitting at a computer, and I couldn't listen to it when the kids were around. (I actually ended up listening to the majority of it while at work on overnight shifts )
It was well executed, though the level of sheer earthly evil Craddock McDermott embodied was pretty extreme. He had some pretty fancy ghost powers.
As a child who grew up in the 90s, I couldn't help but wonder if there's some strange connection between the novel and the Nirvana song.
I've read these all out of order, of course. The first Joe Hill book I read was his 3rd (Nos4A2 -- which was INCREDIBLE) , and then I read Horns (his second), and then I read The Fireman (his fourth), and now I've finally read Heart Shaped Box (his first novel, though he had been writing before). I can tell that Heart Shaped box is an early effort in his career, but that's ok. I'm going to continue reading his stuff.

If you have read any of Joe Hill's other stuff, then just be prepared and remember this was his first published novel, and later efforts are definitely more polished. But if you haven't read his other stuff, totally read this. And then read there rest of his stuff. I have liked them all.

It  is my favorite book by him and I think I have read most all of them.

For Nim, I chose "Brother to Shadows" by one of my all time favorite fantasy writers Andre Norton.
I finished this today. I had forgotten how much I enjoy Andre Norton's Writing style. I am sad that this led up to more books but none were written with these four characters before her death. Thanks for picking it KathyB, I wish I had read it sooner!
